Don’t you hate summer colds?
They are the worst.
Stuffy noses, a sore throat, and feeling achy is not the way to spend a warm summer day.
We should be outside enjoying the pool, but instead we are inside heavily covered with blankets because we feel awful.
The good thing is that our symptoms usually are minor and with some good old- fashioned TLC, we will be feeling better in no time.
The question is, how do we know we have a summer cold?
We know because of the symptoms, and just like a cold has symptoms, our breaking away from God has symptoms too.
It’s called sin, and unlike the common summer cold, sin can turn into something more serious…Death!
“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” James 4:17
We all know from experience how to combat a cold and most of us know what medicine to take once the symptoms of a cold start to affect you.
We have so many over the counter and natural remedies we can take to get rid of it.
Colds normally last three to five days depending on how well we take care of ourselves.
Then we feel better, look better, and go back to our normal routine.
But what do we do when we are no longer tethered to our source of repeated spiritual healing?
Welp, we begin to find worldly remedies for a spiritual virus or in some cases disease.
We can’t fill our car tanks with water right?
Our spirtual tanks can only be filled with the remedy that is strong enough to fight all the symptoms at once, to keep your spiritual car running smoothly.
God is the only remedy to our sin “symptoms.”
I mean when you really think about it, you know that when you have not prayed in a while, or read your bible, or just taken time out your day to acknowledge God in your day to day life, things become very messy.
Like that sore throat gives us a warning sign of an impending illness, a bad thought is a warning sign of impending spiritual setback.
“And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Mark 2:20-23
When I was a kid, I would get colds constantly. Summer colds were worst only because I was out of school, and so were all of my friends.
So, I would be stuck in the house watching from the window while sneezing, coughing, having a throat sore, and just feeling terrible.
I always knew a cold was coming because my throat would become scratchy and really dry. But, when I was a kid I would not pay attention to the warning signs because I wanted to play.
So instead of telling my mom what was going on, I would continue playing, and doing the normal kid activities until I found myself not being able to get out of bed in the morning.
Or I could not eat anything heavy because my throat was on fire.
I was a sad sight to see during those summer cold periods.
Yet, eventually I did grow to be more in tuned with my body so as soon as I got the first warning, I immediately slowed down and made sure I took some medicine to counter act the cold before it began.
Raise your hand for that Vitamin C!
This did not happen of course until I was much older, but I did become tired of getting sick so often and knew I had to make some changes.
Similar to being in tuned with my body to prevent illness, I must be in tuned with God to prevent spiritual illness.
He is the medicine that takes away my sore feelings of anger, my runny bad language, my achy fleshy desires, and my stuffy sense of selfishness.
I can go outside and enjoy my life because he has cured all that ails me.
Have you taken your spiritual medicine today?
Lastly, in recognizing our sins as symptoms we must be aware of the first sign that our relationship with Christ is a bit off…..
1. If you have not been able to find anything in your life to be fulfilling then you need your medicine.
2. If you find yourself cursing and lashing out often just because you feel like it, then you need your medicine.
3. If you are becoming more comfortable in causing someone pain and sadness, then you need your medicine.
4. If you cannot summon up any joy even during a normal joyful period, then you need your medicine.
5. If you have a hole within you that drugs, alcohol, sex, smoking, sneaking, lying, nor hurting yourself or others cannot fill then you must take your medicine.
The medicine of God guarantees no side effects except for Joy, Peace, Forgiveness, Healing, Strength, and Wisdom that will surpass the world’s understanding.
The best part about this is, even when you feel those symptoms arise, you will already have a direct IV line so that the medicine of God automatically heals you.
Hallelujah for healing!
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 1 Corinthians 5:17
Let’s finally rid ourselves of those nasty colds (sin) by drawing closer to the only source of permanent healing, God!
You got this because God got us!
Sincerely,
